Traditional Signwriting – what is it? You’ve seen the old style pubs with traditional looking gold leaf hand painted signs? That type of sign is in high demand for businesses that are looking are an authentic look. There is no real alternative. You can’t create the same type of style using vinyl, metal or any other kind of signage.Company Sign

Many nightclubs opt for neon signs which look fantastic but I believe that the traditional signwriter who is capable of producing hand written, hand painted signs to a very high standard is a skill that is dying in the industry. This is because, for example, vinyl is less expensive and requires a very different type of skill set. The requirement for being able to develop a brand is a constant in any good sign creator’s arsenal but the differences between writing a professional sign and design and producing a vinyl sign is almost the difference between an artist who can paint a beautiful portrait and one who can create the kind of modern art which old knives and forks. There’s a big contrast between both of these skill sets.

So to answer the original question. Traditional signwriting relates to actually getting down and dirty with a paint brush and applying the paint with one’s hands as opposed to designing with computer software and cutting and printing. I suppose we could argue that traditional signs can also include neon signs, metal signs, etc. This is true. These types of signs are not new. But the phrase we used was “traditional signwriting” not “traditional signmaking”. I think that a clear distinction can be made between the two.
