Finally, another aspect of outdoor digital signage that is less relevant than indoor systems is physical security. Any outdoor screen left unattended will not only have to be secured against theft but also vandalism. A damaged screen will be costly, in both downtime and replacement/repair so ensuring that it is well-protected is vital.

LCD enclosure are easy to mount, either on a wall, ceiling or floor mount system and are weatherproof with temperature control units such as fans and heaters often installed to ensure temperature equilibrium. Also, as they are made from steel with shatterproof screens and can be fitted with tamper-proof locks so they are physically secure too.

The next challenge for an outdoor digital signage installation is keeping it dry. Rainfall and other weather elements can disable most screens so protection from the weather is crucial, as is protection from the sun – with sunlight having the potential to cause a screen to overheat. Consideration needs also to be placed on the range of temperatures that the screen will face throughout the year. The screen needs to be kept cool in the summer whilst also kept warm in the winter, especially if temperatures drop below freezing.

The first challenge with an outdoor screen is finding the location. Not only do you need a good spot with high footfall but the location needs to also be a place where a screen can actually function – near to a power supply and secured, either to a wall, floor mount, or from a ceiling.

Outdoor digital signage has all the same challenges as installing an indoor screen but with added difficulties of weather protection, temperature control, security thrown in.
