Most visas and discover cards do not have the annual fee size that amex does. Why is this card so different from the others that people will pay more to have it ?

It use to be a status symbol. It’s not any more. Most places won’t even take it. Oh, and it’s a charge card. You have to pay off the balance every month.

Amex claims that you don’t have a credit limit with the regular Amex card so if you have to buy an expensive airline ticket at the last minute, you shouldn’t be declined due to hitting the credit limit. (Be advised, they *do* have credit limits, they just don’t advertise them.)
Amex markets the card to the travel industry so it’s highly unlikely the card will be unacceptable by an airline, hotel, rental car or restaurant…but the merchant fee is higher so outside of those categories, the card is disliked.
Amex markets the card to business. I’ve had Amex travel letters, Amex traveler’s checks, a personal Amex card (my fees, my credit limit), a true corporate Amex card (my company paid the fees, the bill and it was their credit history) and a quasi-corporate Amex card (that company paid the fee, but I paid the bill, got reimbursed later and it was *my* credit history if they bill wasn’t paid).
The corporate cards allow the company to run reports on volume usage. Such reports allowed them to negotiate better price deals with airlines, hotels and rental car companies…and they could also see if you used the card at, say, Hooters, gentleman’s clubs or to buy stuff at a department store….
